In 2005, the theme of sustainable development was discussed within UNESCO Netherlands, whereby the role of culture in particular was revealed as an element lacking in clarity; the relationship between the two terms was, however, more clear in earlier UNESCO documents. The National Commission believed that a discussion of this was desirable against the background of what was already being done in the UNESCO Netherlands context within the framework of sustainable development.
This memorandum is aimed at developing a framework within which the activities of the National Commission and its working groups in the area of sustainable development and culture can be developed, and with the help of which contributions can be made to other sustainable development activities, both nationally and internationally (UNESCO).
