This publication is designed to provide Iowa teachers, school administrators and others with a framework and perspective on developing programs in environmental education. It is particularly timely since federal law, state policy and concern over local control are placing a strong emphasis on public participation in environmental decision-making. Through Chapter 257.25 of the Code of lowa, the General Assembly has placed a responsibility upon the schools to prepare students to become environmentally well informed citizens capable of participating fully and intelligrntly in making environmental decisions. The environmental education process is a modified approach for school programs as they seek to provide students with the fundamentals necessary to function as participants in modern society.
